QUEER DIPLOMACY AND LGBT RIGHTS AT THE UN

📆 10 May 2024 🕑 18:00 📍 Rainbow Hub

We are inviting you to a presentation of the book Queer Diplomacy: Homophobia, International Relations and LGBT Human Rights by Douglas Victor Janoff. Queer Diplomacy is the first study of multilateral LGBT human rights diplomacy viewed from the perspective of its practitioners: diplomats, LGBT activists, and multilateral organisations. It is based on the author’s participation in UN meetings in Geneva and New York and 29 interviews with diplomats, human rights advocates, and representatives from the UN and other inter-governmental organisations. The book demonstrates how diplomats and advocates work to promote LGBT rights on the world stage and the conflicts and polarisation that this work triggers among UN member states.

Douglas Victor Janoff is a Canadian of Bulgarian descent who has been working at the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 2009, including as a diplomat in the United States, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. Before working in diplomacy, he was a freelance journalist, policy advisor, and LGBT activist.

The presentation will be followed by a discussion/Q&A with the author.

Moderator: Borislav Gerasimov

EXHIBITION: IT IS A JOY TO BE HIDDEN, AND DISASTER NOT TO BE FOUND

📆 28 May 2024 🕑 18:00 📍 +359 gallery

The exhibition, part of Sofia Pride Arts 2024, draws inspiration from a quote by Donald Woods Winnicott, an English paediatrician and psychoanalyst known for his work in object relations theory and developmental psychology: “It is a joy to be hidden, and disaster not to be found.” This exhibition features a selection of works that explore the theme of being on the “edge of visibility.” The pieces delve into freedom of expression, the play of overlays, hidden meanings, intimate experiences, sexual desire, pornographic imagination, our longings, and deep desires.

Set within the rotunda space of the Water Tower, the exhibition engages the senses and encourages interaction through acts of sliding, lifting, touching, and peering. The viewer is invited to adopt the role of voyeur, experiencing the works through this unique perspective.
